TEXpress Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What are managed lanes?
TEXpress Lanes are toll lanes with a twist: the toll price varies based on the amount of traffic at different times of day. When there's more traffic, the price goes up. When there's less traffic, the price in those lanes goes down. In other words, the price varies with the amount of traffic. For the first few months, the price will based on the time of day so drivers can get used to the toll lanes – the variable pricing will be phased in over time.
Which Texas tags can I use on the TEXpress Lanes? How do I obtain a Texas tag?
You can use any Texas tag on the TEXpress Lanes and all toll roads throughout the state. Your TEXpress Lanes toll usage will simply be deducted from your existing account. Transactions will appear on your statement.

What are the vehicle classifications for the TEXpress Lanes?
Vehicle classes for the TEXpress Lanes will vary by the project and the corridor. Some TEXpress Lanes in the system will base their pricing on axle counts while others will determine their rates by vehicle shape and size.

Axle-Based Tolling

The TEXpress Lanes on the DFW Connector and most TEXpress Lanes within the system will utilize axle-based toll rates. This means the toll you pay is based on the number of axles on your vehicle.

Paying by Shape and Size of Vehicle

Toll prices on the LBJ TEXpress Lanes and the NTE TEXpress Lanes vary by the shape and size of the vehicle you drive, not the number of axles. For example, motorcycles, cars, SUVs, most vans and pickup trucks pay the same price. Large and extra-large trucks pay a slightly higher toll price on the TEXpress Lanes.

What are the carpool and high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) discounts available on the TEXpress Lanes?
Save money by traveling with a passenger. Drivers with one or more passengers qualify for TEXpress Lanes discounts during peak travel times.

High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Users

Motorcycles, carpools and most vanpools are eligible to receive rush-hour discounts on all TEXpress Lanes from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Drivers with one or more passengers will pay the posted toll prices at all other times of the day.
