A section of State Highway 49 will receive a new riding surface during the next couple of years according to plans approved in May by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

“We will be resurfacing a 7.3-mile section of the highway from Farm to Market Road 1735 in Titus County to 0.2 mile east of FM 144 in Morris County,” said Tommy Bruce, area engineer for TxDOT in Mount Pleasant.  “The old pavement will be removed, the base materials strengthened and then the entire roadway will be repaved.”

East Texas Bridge of Longview was awarded the contract for the construction project with a bid of $11.7 million.

"Work on the project should begin in August and take about two years to complete," Bruce said.
