The Memorial City Redevelopment Authority is sponsoring the reconstruction of Gessner Road between I-10 and Long Point Road in the City of Houston, Harris County, Texas.  The proposed project will reconstruct access medians, pavement, sidewalks and driveways; upgrade aging subsurface utilities; enhance landscaping to improve walkability and access to public transportation; and upgrade the street lighting and traffic signal at the intersection of Gessner Road and Westview Drive.

Current Conditions

Gessner Road is a three-lane divided roadway.

Project Background

  • Existing access medians, pavement, sidewalks and driveways are in substandard condition
  • Aging subsurface public utilities
  • Current functional landscaping hinders walkability and access to public transportation
  • Street lighting is inadequate
  • Existing signal at Gessner Road and Westview Drive intersection is outdated

Proposed Improvements

The proposed project includes:

  • Reconstructing access medians, pavement, sidewalks and driveways
  • Upgrading aging subsurface utilities
  • Enhancing landscaping to improve walkability and access to public transportation
  • Upgrading the street lighting and traffic signal at the intersection of Gessner Road and Westview Drive

No additional right of way is needed for this project.

The project is being funded by cost share between the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Memorial City Redevelopment Authority (MCRA)/Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) No 17.

  • Reach project decision from TxDOT

  • Construction anticipated to begin in 2019 and will take approximately 18 months to complete
