US 69 Jacksonville Relief Route Study

Project Overview

US 69 is a north-south rural highway originating in Port Arthur, passing through Beaumont, Lufkin and Tyler, terminating in Denison, Texas.  As part of the Texas Trunk System, which serves as the principal connection for all Texas cities with populations over 20,000, and the National Highway System, US 69 services both intrastate and interstate traffic moving people and goods. In addition, US 69 is a designated hurricane evacuation route providing safe passage for the Texas coastal areas of Beaumont and Houston/Galveston through Jacksonville.

Details

The function of US 69 is to move both local and through regional traffic efficiently and safely.  Previously conducted feasibility studies have found that US 69 in Jacksonville is operating at an undesirable level.  Approximately 8 miles of US 69 goes directly through the City of Jacksonville.  Within this 8-mile stretch there are 8 signalized intersections causing increased travel time and significantly reduced mobility.  Jacksonville experiences increased congestion and decline in efficiency during hurricane evacuations. Additionally, the highest concentration of traffic accidents in Jacksonville is along US 69 in the downtown area. The US 69 project study area is located in northern Cherokee County and begins approximately 5 miles north of Jacksonville, near Love’s Lookout and extends south to Craft. The exact study area boundaries will be set as a part of the analysis.
