Study Update based on Feedback Received
Feedback from the public regarding the reliever route south of Gainesville has been very important to the project team. TxDOT received a number of requests for further analysis of a reliever route option north of the City of Gainesville. Due to this, TxDOT has decided to suspend the current US 82 Reliever Route Study. Before developing reliever route options any further, TxDOT will study the feasibility of a reliever route option north of Gainesville and analyze advantages and disadvantages compared to a reliever route south of Gainesville.
Reliever Route Study
US 82 is a major thoroughfare for motorists and trucks in Gainesville, Texas. As population and commercial activity continue to grow in the area, it has become necessary to move forward with the planning and design of a reliever route that can more adequately meet the capacity and safety needs of the corridor. The US 82 Reliever Route Study is currently underway to identify a recommended alignment that can be carried forward into future phases of project development. The study area is generally bound by I-35 to the west and FM 678 to the east.
The goal of the study was to conduct the necessary technical analysis to identify a recommended corridor or route that could be carried forward into future phases of project development. The study builds upon previous feasibility studies for US 82, with the most recent conducted in December 2012. The feasibility study in 2012 was based on the steps outlined in the Transportation Planning Process as defined by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and consists of using data collection and comparative analysis to build consensus around a preferred long-term alternative. Three stakeholder meetings and two public meetings were held in relation to the 2016-2017 study to receive input, evaluate alternatives and determine a locally preferred alternative.

As part of the study, TxDOT formed a stakeholder working group that helped guide the study. A public meeting was held Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016. An online survey to seek further public input was live from Nov. 10 to Dec. 7, 2016. Responses were compiled and are available below. A second public meeting was held May 16, 2017, to show the public how input was used to refine alternatives. Funding is available for planning and study development only. Construction is not funded at this time.
